Kitchen Tables

The kitchen table was probably one of the first to be designed with specific functionality in mind.  Some of the earliest kitchen tables would probably fall into the category of folding tables, being either tilt top tables of drop leaf tables.  They were made of wood and by being able to collapse as with the tilt top or being able to have the size considerably reduced as with the drop leaf, they were easier to move and would take up less space.

However, as homes became more permanent, kitchen tables and chairs became the centerpieces of the kitchen and the most versatile setting in the house.  Even today with the casual kitchen table, the uses are varied.  Not only can the family sit around the table to enjoy a meal, the cook can use the surface for meal preparation.

Because kitchen tables are often used as preparations areas or as counter top space in small kitchens, most have tops that are laminated or made of a durable, scratch resistant material.

In the more modern kitchens, particularly in newer homes, the kitchen table has been replaced by the work island with an extended counter top for snacking or enjoying a breakfast while reading the newspaper (online, of course).

Many small apartments or loft apartments have only room for the kitchen table since the formal dining room has been omitted.  The kitchen table has always been a good investment for the active family or the cook who needs a little more space.  However, what was once known as the kitchen table has in many cases been removed to a small room or area adjacent to the kitchen, the breakfast room or breakfast nook.  As such the more casual kitchen table has been upgraded to a breakfast table, assuming the formal dining room is used for evening meals.

Kitchen tables are generally smaller than dining tables, usually providing seating for two to four people.  More durable than other tables in the house, the style is often more casual and often has a utilitarian appeal as well as inviting all who pass to sit for a cup of coffee or glass of lemonade.
