The William and Mary era ushered in a more comfortable visual appeal for a more comfortable lifestyle. It is not necessarily expected to find all of the characteristics of the design in each piece. However, three or four elements at a minimum are usually present. Among the most recognizable characteristics of this design are:
- Turned trumpet style legs.
- Crossed stretchers, often X – shaped
- Hooded cabinet tops, either single or double
- Ball feet or bun feet (slightly flattened ball).
- Aprons or skirts that reflect the hoods on cabinets
- Large unbroken surfaces that were often lacquered.
- Introduction of veneers from the French.
- Often burled walnut.
