Cottage style furniture is special. It often mirrors the personality of the home owner or apartment dweller. While it is not inconceivable that cottage style decor fits into our larger homes with a bit of ease, most of us think of cottage style as a compact style that fits into our bungalows or as the name suggests, our cottages.
Generally speaking some of the most interesting cottage style decor I have seen is in the smaller two bedroom home. For some reason it just seems to work in smaller houses. We will work from that assumption for the benefit of this article.
The daybed is a welcome addition to most cottage style homes. We have covered the advantages of the daybed.
Cottage Style Decor and Daybeds
The daybed to the left is perfectly covered to emphasize the efficiency of a daybed and how well it blends into the cottage style home. The daybed in the illustration meets all criteria for cottage style, in fact English cottage style. There are three basic colors in the room. There are two predominant colors, the reds and the greens, with a lighter more neutral shade tying the two together.
More importantly, note the bold floral pattern mixed with the plaid shams and the striped skirt. This is a prime example of cottage style that works.
The daybed in the example is a painted wood frame, again totally in keeping with the cottage style furniture concept.
Wood Daybeds Ideal for Cottage Style
Below are examples of wood frames for daybeds that would work very well with the daybed English cottage style pattern above.
Of course, a new daybed can be purchased. Some of us prefer to buy a daybed for our cottage style den that comes to us new. Others of us prefer to shop the thrift stores or auctions for daybeds. Occasionally we can find wonderful wood daybeds that are ideal for our cottage style decor that may not be the color we prefer but are the style we like. A little paint can turn an ordinary daybed into the perfect background for your cottage style decor.
Cottage Style bedding is the complement to a beautifully redone daybed. Again, purchasing a daybed bedding set is one option and in some cases the best option if the colors and patterns can be found.
One point that needs to be made about cottage style furniture and cottage style decor is that most often we prefer to look for bargains at thrift stores or at auctions. We generally spend the money we save on our furniture purchases to select our favorite patterns and colors at a fabric store, usually a store that makes draperies and bedding.
We have found that often we can find a selection of fabric that answers our every desire. In many home furnishing stores you will be able to find someone to custom make your daybed skirt or cover, the comforter, and the pillow shames. Often upholstery stores are a good place to begin.
Cottage style decor should reflect your style. The colors should be your choice, not a design by default. For that reason we often purchase used furniture that is better suited for our cottage style furniture concepts. The design of a cottage style home is based as much on fabrics and patterns, textures and materials as it is on the actual furniture.
